You must have a structure. Think about the question ‘how do you sell ?’. Do you actually know ? People who make things for a living will have a process to make whatever it is they make, why should selling be any different ?
An example of a sales process might be :-
1 – Introduction (hello, I am ***, what is your name?)
2 – Qualification (what do you want, how will you use it etc etc?)
3 – Presentation (here it is !!)
4 – Close (would you like to buy it ?)

As sales people we tend to take shortcuts and become lazy in our dealings with our customers. Its very easy to miss key areas Which might help us sell things to them . By following a rigid process, it helps us to maintain disciline and not fall into these basic traps. crucially It also allows us to take control of the customer as we are driving the conversation.

Talk to your customers on their level. There is nothing more annoying than a sales person who projects their own personality too much. The most obvious example of this is the steryotype ‘Salesman’, bouncing off the walls, flash suit, full of energy, go-go-go, sell-sell-sell. Contrary to popular opinion these people tend to make very average sales people. Be yourself but at the same time remember that everything you do has to revolve around the customer, not you. At the same time, by being on a level with a customer, remember that you are taking control !! (there it is again, that word, Control !!!!)

Dont be afraid to ask for the business. This is the most common fault with sales people. It sounds easy doesn’t it ? just saying "would you like to buy it?" but it can be very hard. This is usually because the seller doubts that the potential buyer will say "O.K then !" but sometimes they do and what have you got to lose anyway ?. Remember, if you have taken control of your customer, they will roll over much more easily !!
