Learning to Master Time Management

Effectively managing time is an ability that everyone can learn. It is simply a matter of getting rid of old bad habits and implementing new good habits. Naturally, it’s easier to read about this than to do it.

Many people have a hard time making important changes. You will get better at time management, but everyone changes at his or her own pace. You should, therefore, be patient and expect to have some challenges along the way. That said, there are some things that you can start doing right away to help you better manage your time and to be more productive during the day.

One thing that you should do before you get too gung ho about changing your habits is figure out what you are doing now. In the first couple of days you won’t want to change anything. Just begin by making yourself a list of the things that take up your time. If you take 45 minutes to collect your thoughts write that down too. schedule your entire week. This will give you a blueprint to time management. It is at this point that you can begin figuring out how to change what is necessary to change. One of the easiest time management tips to follow is to break big tasks down into smaller tasks. When you do this, large projects are not so intimidating, as you can work at them in stages. If you can work on different elements of the job on different days, you can also more easily stay interested in it. The bigger the task that sits in front of you, the more likely you will be to procrastinate. Such big projects leave people with a sense of dread that they will be impossible to ever complete. By breaking it down into small pieces it becomes manageable and easier to do.

Draw up a schedule for yourself. This does not need to be written out for every second. It is a fact that you need breaks and this means scheduling that time into your day too. Looking at a schedule like this can help you see just when you need to move to the next task and how soon until your next break. You can make the schedule as detailed as you like, but a word of warning: the more detailed your schedule, the more stressed out it will make you. Trying to schedule your time down to the minute is great. Actually keeping that schedule is almost impossible. Don’t overexert yourself! Learning good time management skills is something that everybody can do. It’s not something you can accomplish all at once, though. If you have developed unproductive habits, it may take time to change them. It’s possible to change your habits, but it takes work. It’s normal for everyone to have difficulties, so don’t worry if it isn’t always easy. Once you are comfortable with time management, you will be able to plan your day easily and stay ahead of schedule without a second thought.
