Christian Funeral Rites And Their Importance

By Guest Author On November 27, 2010 Under Personal Development

For a devout Christian, a funeral ceremony is a celebration of the deceased’s journey into the after life. Funeral services and rituals are alleviating, owing to the strong belief that the deceased has finally found a permanent home in God’s place.

Christians consider death as a happy exit from the world of grief and a passage into the world of permanent bliss. It provides some solace to the bereaved family that the dead person is with God Himself and is enjoying the bliss of heaven. This greatly helps in lessening the pain that death of the person causes. The Christian funeral ceremonies are performed by devout Christians keeping these beliefs in thought.

Generally, a pastor is the main officiator at a Christian funeral service. The funeral service generally takes place at the church of which the deceased was a regular visitor. Though a casket is not used in the service usually, but when it is being conducted in a funeral home, casket is usually present. A traditional Christian funeral ceremony does not involve viewing of the dead body at the time of service.

The funeral ceremony is organized to remember the dead person, and it starts with singing of religious hymns and readings from the Bible and Holy Scriptures. A short message is delivered by the pastor, after which there is a mass prayer.

Then the attendees share the grief of the family as well as close friends and tell about their personal experiences as to how the dead person has touched their lives and created an everlasting impression on their minds. These days, people also do a slide show on the life of the dead person or play a pre-recorded video taken from his or her lifetime.

The last leg of the ceremony is the serving of food at a fellowship reception conducted usually inside the church itself. A graveside service is usually not included, but some make an exception to this.
