Are You Taking Prenatal Vitamins For Your Hair?

By Guest Author On December 5, 2010 Under Personal Development

A number of non-pregnant women have been taking prenatal vitamins supposedly to grow hair thicker, longer and may also work as an hair loss treatment. But the fact is that prenatal vitamins for hair growth have not been proven.

The reason behind the belief that prenatal vitamins aid in hair growth may be due to its folic acid content. Folic acid is added to prenatal vitamins as it prevents congenital malformations, brain and spinal cord defects in the baby. Folic acid is a B vitamin that help and promote growth of healthy new cells.

Pregnant women have thicker hair because of pregnancy hormones. For non-pregnant women, around 20% of the hairs are in the resting phase (telogen phase) . During the resting phase, it is quite typical for hair to fall out. For pregnant women, the surge in hormones results to having more hairs on the growth phase (anagen phase) and lesser hairs in the resting phase. This accounts for the appearance of thicker hair. Hirsutism (excess body hair) and other hair changes during pregnancy are also very common, still because of hormonal effects.

Although a number of these prenatal vitamins can be purchased over the counter , they are not really encouraged to be taken by women who are not pregnant. Prenatal vitamins are made for pregnant women and aside from folic acid these are also high in iron. Iron is needed by the expectant mother in preparation for blood loss in childbirth. If you’re not pregnant, taking too much iron can be dangerous since excess iron is not excreted by the body. Nonpregnant women usually complain of stomach upsets. This is because too much iron causes irritation and even ulceration of the stomach lining.

So never take a higher amount of any vitamin especially orally since this may have adverse effects. If your main concern is to grow hair longer in less time, opt instead for topical treatments or remedies.

To make your hair grow faster , Nisim International, a Canadian innovator in hair care technology, has a ground-breaking product called F.A.S.T. or Fortified Amino Scalp Therapy. This is a shampoo and conditioner system specifically made to grow your hair up to 45% faster just by using the products daily. Unlike oral vitamins and supplements that may have negative effects, FAST is guaranteed safe as it is herbal based – it is so safe that you can use it even on children. It functions by lightly cleansing your hair then feeding each follicle with the vitamins and essential nutrients it need to grow healthy and fast.
